Hainan province's recent decision to build a 1.28million RMB gold toilet may have seemed like a logical, future-proof investment at the time, but the latest health findings favour traditional toilets, suggesting that squatting is actually better for your health. The science is explained on the website Slate:
Squat toilets prevalent in Asia better for your health?
Gold toilet worth 1.28 million RMB on display in Hainan
The shiny shitter is currently on display at the 11th World Toilet Summit and Expo that began yesterday in the Hainan provincial capital of Haikou.
Oh, the things we do for our phones! Man gets arm stuck in toilet.
Next time you take a squat and “swipe” on your iPhone to play Papertoss or send a quick message, please remember this guy in Jiangsu province. After dropping his phone into the toilet, he had the intestinal fortitude to go fishing it out. Instead, he ended up getting stuck but, after a couple of crowbar-brandishing firemen, showed up he was able to fully relieve himself. He saved his phone but it’s probably safe to say lost the high score on the snake game he had going.
Public Bathrooms around Shanghai now free
The Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau, which we didn't know existed before today, announced that 2,400 of the city's public toilets are now free of charge in preparation for the Expo. In case you aren't familiar with the numbers, that means all of the downtown public toilets as well as 80 percent of local toilets throughout Shanghai are cost free. We'd make a joke about how we thought all of shanghai was a free public toilet, but that would be too crass, and really not a joke at all. Maybe now people will stop using the street as a free public toilet? We kind of doubt it. Photo by Shanghaidaddy @ flickr
60th anniversary, golden toilets: A perfect celebration
People all over the country have been doing wacky things for the 60th anniversary: hair statues, wild safaris, you name it. But this one takes the (urinal) cake: a public garden in Panyu has just opened a massive tourist park with over twenty scenic spots, and "six star bathroom facilities". What makes a bathroom worthy of six stars, you may ask? The bathroom is made of gold, of course! Apparently the luxurious bathroom in the new NanYue park complex cost eight million yuan to make, and will host a grand opening party on National Day. Happy birthday, China!
Get paid to pee in Putuo
From today onwards, if you're looking for some extra cash, go take a whizz at a newly opened store on Changshou Road. The store, which specializes in selling water-saving bathroom wares, is offering 10RMB to anyone who goes to the newly opened toilet there. Those who write an article about using the toilet will have an opportunity to win bathroom wares worth thousands (saaaay...), according to Shanghai Daily. Of course, now that this news is out in the open, expect long lines to form outside the store. Yesterday, people were already lining up to patronize the toilet. Update: Aw, it looks like the store's already lowered its offering from 10RMB to 1RMB.
Speaking of toilets...
