Fancy dinner in my bathroom?

Toilet seats instead of chairs, urinals on the wall, and turd-like ice cream -- this is not some skanky sex club in Berlin but a bathroom-themed restaurant which has recently opened up in Kunming, Yunnan province. The eatery is the latest addition to a chain of restaurants called Modern Toilet that started out in Taiwan and in recent years expanded to Hong Kong and mainland China. Other mainland cities that are home to a Modern Toilet restaurant include Shenzhen, Jinjiang, Foshan, Xiamen and Chongqing. There isn't any news of a Modern Toilet opening here in Shanghai yet, but they're definitely looking for a franchisee in case any of you thinks this sort of toilet humour will work here. more ›

What does one do in Shanghai when a public toilet just can't be found?

Piss on the streets, of course. Like this woman did on Tianyaoqiao Road, near Xujiahui. Chinese internet users have already dubbed this incident the "Xujiahui pants-down-gate" (徐家汇“脱裤门”). Now we really regret not having a camera on us the other day when we had the good fortune of witnessing the Shanghai edition of "Better Shitty, Better Life". With a little luck, we won't have to wait too long for our next big scoop. more ›

China tops Huffington Post's list of 9 countries with world's worst toilets

There is often a time and a place for toilet humour, but in China, it appears that there is nothing funny to be found in the lavatory department. Doug Lanksy of the Huffington Post reports that China has topped the "World's Worst Toilet" survey. more ›

Public Bathrooms around Shanghai now free

Public Bathrooms around Shanghai now free

The Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau, which we didn't know existed before today, announced that 2,400 of the city's public toilets are now free of charge in preparation for the Expo. In case you aren't familiar with the numbers, that means all of the downtown public toilets as well as 80 percent of local toilets throughout Shanghai are cost free. We'd make a joke about how we thought all of shanghai was a free public toilet, but that would be too crass, and really not a joke at all. Maybe now people will stop using the street as a free public toilet? We kind of doubt it. Photo by Shanghaidaddy @ flickr more ›

60th anniversary, golden toilets: A perfect celebration

60th anniversary, golden toilets: A perfect celebration

People all over the country have been doing wacky things for the 60th anniversary: hair statues, wild safaris, you name it. But this one takes the (urinal) cake: a public garden in Panyu has just opened a massive tourist park with over twenty scenic spots, and "six star bathroom facilities". What makes a bathroom worthy of six stars, you may ask? The bathroom is made of gold, of course! Apparently the luxurious bathroom in the new NanYue park complex cost eight million yuan to make, and will host a grand opening party on National Day. Happy birthday, China! more ›

Get paid to pee in Putuo

Get paid to pee in Putuo

From today onwards, if you're looking for some extra cash, go take a whizz at a newly opened store on Changshou Road. The store, which specializes in selling water-saving bathroom wares, is offering 10RMB to anyone who goes to the newly opened toilet there. Those who write an article about using the toilet will have an opportunity to win bathroom wares worth thousands (saaaay...), according to Shanghai Daily. Of course, now that this news is out in the open, expect long lines to form outside the store. Yesterday, people were already lining up to patronize the toilet. Update: Aw, it looks like the store's already lowered its offering from 10RMB to 1RMB. more ›

Shanghai getting potty upgrade for the World Expo

Much like the better toilet campaign enacted by Beijing before the Olympics, Shanghai will be upgrading its public restrooms in time for the World Expo. The city has said it will clean up and renovate more than 5,200 public toilets to meet the “urgent needs” of roughly 70 million expected Expo visitors. more ›

The highly profitable public toilet at the Shanghai Railway Station

The public toilet outside the Shanghai Railway Station costs RMB1 per visit and is said to earn RMB100 million each year.
