While we've heard of people being thrown out of their homes in other districts and counties, there seems to be the thought that Shanghai is just too civilized to play host to this kind of brutish behavior. Not so. Just a little before the start of the New Year, residents of Tongbei Lu in the Yangpu District were awakened in the middle of the night by dozens of helmeted workers armed with metal bars and bricks. Le Monde found a video of the attack.

A few live shows this weekend
With the holiday season in full swing things usually slow down in the music scene. But this weekend there are a few shows that should get us through to the New Year.
Live Music: PK-14, Coldcut, Apenino and more
For all of those of you who stayed at home, hunched over the computer, waiting for an update on the happenings in live music this weekend....well, we apologize. Dust yourself off, pick up the shaver and take a shower, today is a big day for music. Getting things started early, 4:30pm at 4Live, are Taiwan indie pop duo, Natural Q. Seems to be the season for indie pop, after performances last month by Carrchy and...
Live Music: IGO, Beethoven and a Nanjing music festival
For any one who missed it, Cold Fairyland and the Scoff both had concerts last night at the Shanghai Concert Hall and 4Live, respectively. Yesterday afternoon Shanghaiist had spent a solid 2 hours writing an exquisite piece of prose about these two shows... but alias, the evil internet goblin crashed our computer, causing us to lose forever that beautiful essay... well, at least you won't miss out on what is happening tonight.
Torturing Nurses and Lolita Vibrator Torture
Never able to keep a secret, Shanghaiist has gotten some fat little morsels of gossip on our plate that we are dying to share...but that will have to wait until next week.....for now you will have to be content with this weekends roundup of live events.
Fire at Live Bar! Show will go on (eventually)
It being late Sunday night, Brad was the only person in the bar at the time. But still, with the fire and the fire trucks and all, he described the experience as "fucking scary" and is now thinking about getting some kind of fire insurance for the place. Brad said there were no injuries or deaths that he knew about, even though dozens of people "unofficially" live in the building. Brad spent the night in a nearby hotel and as of a few minutes ago, there was still no electricity at the bar. Live Bar needs electricity by Wednesday, because (you heard it here first) Australian instrumental rock trio Dirty Three are planning on playing a free show at Live Bar at around 10 that night, a warm-up for their scheduled gig at Yunfeng Theater on Thursday. So let's hope they get this figured out -- and be sure to check out Live Bar's bathrooms: "I went back in last night," Brad said, "and only the back part near the toilet smelled of smoke. It used to smell of urine, so this is actually an improvement."
