Via City Weekend we learn that the documentary film about last year's Converse-sponsored (and Split Works organized) Love Noise rock music tour of China is now viewable at a DVD player near you. Love Noise put Beijing bands PK14 and Queen Sea Big Shark on a converted bus and sent them on a two-week, six-city tour during the height of Olympics craziness last August. The trailer to the Love Noise film is embedded in this post, and after the jump you'll find a slew of related clips, uploaded to YouTube six days ago. The director's first name is Hammer, so it's got to be good.

In their first show of the year, the Shanghai's underground house and techno crew, Void, take a break from hosting the likes of Underground Resistance, Robert Hood, DJ Bone and Neil Landstrumm to showcase their own residents with a live, improvised decks and drum machine performance.

Neocha's Sean Leow drops knowledge on asiascoutnetwork.com: "[T]here is a scene of more pure or underground hip-hop in Shanghai that stays true to the original style and sound of hip-hop, which was started in the Bronx during the 1970s. Additionally, there is a related genre of what can be called Chinese hip-hop ('嘻哈' in Chinese) which exists in between and overlaps with both the commercial 'pop-rap' and underground hip-hop genres." Maximilian Hecker is pretty big in China, having played a few well attended shows in the past. With German Music Council meeting in Guangzhou there has been a spike in German artists hitting Shanghai. Hecker plays Tuesday night at the Zhi Jiang Dream Factory in what will be a very intimate show. Things get started around 8:30pm and tickets are RMB280.

After months of nothing more than a trickle of live shows, there is a flood of gigs this weekend and Shanghaiist is left wondering how to manage with all the choices. Tonight at Yuyintang, Tookoo will be playing with 3 other bands. Being called everything from EMO to Indie, Tookoo is puts on a solid performance and we expect the small confines of YYT to be bursting with people.

With the Olympics winding down, the underground gigs seem to be finally picking up. We still aren't sure what is going on at Yuyintang, their webpage isn't loading and the message they were sending out on Facebook was vague on when they were planning to re-open. Yesterday we text-messaged them regarding The Gar, who were scheduled to play tonight and YYT confirmed the gig was still on. Shanghaiist plans on showing up tonight, but with all the uncertainty we might be the only ones. Also, tonight at Live Bar they are going back to the blues with Plastic Shell and more.

          

DJ J Walk from djvibe.com played an amazing set at The Shelter last night.

Phreaktion's Sweatshop events at The Shelter have been going strong for awhile now, and this Saturday 5/31 promises to keep the momentum going. Once again, flithy drum 'n bass is on the menu. Headlining is Canada's J Walk:

J Walk, from Canadian based clubbing website djvibe.com makes his junglistic debut at Sweatshop this month. Having just returned from London, Sweatshop heads are in for a fresh tuneage treat!

Andy Best and Cameron Hirst of Temple Gates feature the very first edition of their show Friday Night Underground which offers us a slice of Shanghai's underground live music scene with female band The Happy Strings performing at Windows Tembo live music bar. Hosted by Aric S. Queen, music columnist for City Weekend (Shanghai) and Anthony Gonzalez.

We saw this movie in the theater, in Paris, which it seems is one of the only places where this movie could be seen on the big screen other than at film festivals. The film is actually from a few years back, but was never shown in China, and while we think there are probably DVDs floating around, we can't say that we've seen any of them.
