This is what a job fair in China looks like

Over 20,000 students braved freezing temperatures, wind, and rain to attend a job fair at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan on Sunday, February 27. Many lined up for hours outside the gymnasium on campus waiting for their chance to distribute resumes and talk with recruiters inside. The more than 200 companies and institutions who took part will provide nearly 10,000 positions. more ›

Shanghai college girls scared of ending up unmarried

Betty Friedan would be ashamed! Shanghai women may be rumored to be independent and strong willed, but it looks like the thing they're still most afraid of is not getting married by the time they're 30. These women, allegedly past prime child birthing years, are called "3s ladies" or "sheng nu" (leftover women). It seems that rather than looking up to these 70s-born career women, more than 70% of female graduates in 17 Chinese universities think they're to be pitied. Well, if even top grads feel that way, then no wonder there's such a huge university student "mistress" problem. more ›

No longer okay in China: Being a university student mistress

Chongqing Normal University (重庆师范大学) and Southwest Normal University (西南大学), both located in Chongqing prefecture, became the first two institutions to ban their students from "being an escort, a mistress or having one-night stands" recently, a move that has caused wide debate about what students do and how to police them. more ›

Chinese universities are missing the mark, students complain

Students are unsatisfied with the quality of higher education here in China, a recent survey discovered. A China Youth Daily poll of 4,488 students found that 59% think China's universities don't rank among the world's top schools. Even though Peking University got 12th place in the latest QS Asian University Ranking, its students say they "have not learned much," and 61% also admitted to observing academic cheating. They blame the schools: over half say their education did not encourage innovation, that the criteria for academic achievement was poor, that their university lacked first-level educators. Instead, over 71% wish to see "independent culture" and a "cultivation of talent" at the top university of their dreams. more ›

Buck for your bang: Shanghai sperm bank searches for university-age donors

Buck for your bang: Shanghai sperm bank searches for university-age donors

Calling all university studs! The Shanghai sperm bank is setting up a branch in university-friendly Songjiang district to encourage more frequent visits. As an additional incentive, the bank offers 50 yuan for the first sample, and if you're a good donor, 200 yuan for every subsequent, uh, turn. Why Songjiang? Because university students represent 95 percent of the sperm-donor pool in Shanghai. Although the bank has quite the supply (20,000 units of sperm), only about 10% are usable for conception, due to health reasons or "low sperm quality." Couples may wait up to year for a viable sample -- hence, the additional search for donors. Get cracking, men! more ›

Evan Osnos over at The New Yorker has found a sneak preview of what's to come during the 60th anniversary celebrations in Beijing. Chinese internet meme of the day: "Obtained employment"

Chinese internet meme of the day: "Obtained employment"

According to ESWN, the "obtained employment" internet meme sprung from a July 12 post by a netizen on a Tianya Forum which said "I have just obtained employment. I have obtained employment. I am ecstatic. I have obtained employment without knowing the facts!" The netizen, who had just graduated, was having his file transferred to a HR center when he took a peek and found a "Employment agreement document" already red stamped. After reading the contents, "I was immediately stunned... The agreement documented stated the name of my employer in black and white, next to a big red stamp of that employer." An employer he had never heard of. Why would the university do this to him? To meet a quota by the Ministry of Education that forces them to be responsible for finding employment for their students. Since institutes with low employment-on-graduation rates need to accept fewer students, some have taken the shortcut of just stamping "obtained employment" on their wards' forms. more ›
