This weekend seems to be a strong mix of intellectual stimulation coupled with a healthy dose of partying. First off, you probably know already, but the JZ Music Festival will run this entire weekend. After Dee Dee Bridgewater rocks it at Yunfeng Theater tonight, the festival will bring together a host of different artists and bands for a huge gathering in Century Park on Saturday and Sunday. Besides that, there will also be a multitude of speakers coming to Shanghai (to discuss controversial theories about China's past and what its future will look like), and we'll celebrate the birthdays of one of our favorite bar spots (Cotton's!), one of Shanghai's funnest DJ groups (Uprooted Sunshine!) and the start of a Shanghai chapter for one of our favorite charitable initiatives during college (Habitat for Humanity!).
Japan's embracement of reggae and dancehall has always been one of those things we've found delightfully peculiar. Luckily, their love for the island sound has actually produced quite a few listenable acts - one of which will be coming to the Shelter tonight.
The merry men of Uprooted Sunshine bring long-standing dub pioneer Adrian Sherwood for a live trip deep into Dub forest tonight at Shelter.
We jumped on the chance to hit the first PAUSE party of 2009 this last weekend, a non-profit art event organized by the dedicated music mavens of Shanghai - Phreaktion, Antidote, Uprooted Sunshine, Eklektik, and their friends. We shook our booties to electronica, dubstep, electro-grunge and Tibetan reggae, and got delightfully drunk off one of the best drink specials you'll find on the Bund. Can anyone think of a better way to spend a Sunday, rainy or no?
The Captain's Hostel isn't just a place for enjoying Bund-like views with (relatively) cheap beers or for picking up tourists, oh no. This Sunday they're hosting the always brilliant PAUSE. These free, non-profit collaborative events with the cream of the city's creative talent have been running since 2005 and are always unmissable. This Sunday's is no different.
Steve Barker, a pioneering British alternative music DJ and active BBC regional radio broadcaster, usually spends his days rocking out Beijing. But tonight, he's gracing Shanghai with his presence by helping host a dub and reggae music festival at the Shelter.
2008 Anno Domini / Year of the Rat will be remembered as a difficult one for China in general. Its effects were felt by all, including those involved in Shanghai's numerous musical scenes. It was a year in which artists, promoters and fans had to deal with even more obstacles and barriers than usual in their quest to generate culture and make the whole metropolis live up to its reputation as one of Asia's most dynamic and happening cities.
The reggae-loving Rastafarians of Jamaica be lookin at all this world financial crisis and thinkin "Babylon be fallin' down". Shanghai may have avoided the worst of the world's money problems… but it can't escape the Reggae sound as the city's Uprooted Sunshine Sound System celebrate its third birthday at The Shelter tonight.
It's been a while, but this Sunday will see a welcome return for the PAUSE collective, who will be bringing their heady mix of independent art, music, and creative stalls to everyone's favourite ex-Blue Ice hang out, The Shelter. Kicking off at 4pm down on Yong Fu Lu, there will be a bunch of inventive things to get excited about, featuring contributors from across the globe and, of course, the cream of Shanghai's arts scene.
After a loud and exciting Halloween, tonight is a good chance to head out, sit back and chill to the soothing tunes of The Swamp and 21G at 4Live. Alternatively, composer Mark Chan has put together a live score for the classic, silent Chinese film Little Toys and will be performing it during the film’s screening at the Shanghai Concert Hall. If you are craving excitement, then head to Live Bar where a Beijing Brit-pop...
In our 10 years of clubbing life we have never seen anything like this:
Looking for something to do after our happy hour?
Shanghaiist was at the Pause DJ Party at The Lab last Saturday. It was an exciting evening of Drum & Bass, Hip-hop, Brazillian Beats and Minimal Electro. The cops stopped by, beer was flowing, people were dancing and that was only at 7pm. We had a good time. Shout-outs to The Lab, Phreaktion, :e:klek.tik, Xanadu Figure Land, The Antidote and Uprooted Sunshine for throwing down an excellent party.
