Interview: VOID entering its terrible twos!

Hard working underground DJ group VOID has made it to the two year mark here in Shanghai. They'll be celebrating tomorrow with a party at the Shelter, but we took some time to get to know a little more about the group. Check out our interview with Shanghai Ultra below:

This week was sick with the flu week over here at Shanghaiist, but now that the fever's gone down and the coughing has slowed, we. are. ready. to. party... *cough* Okay, maybe we shouldn't party TOO hard (our mothers would get mad).

Like many, we had our doubts, but Thursday's warehouse party on Guilin Road left us surprisingly pleased. With the Void crew manning the turntables, a large empty building was transformed into a thumping nightclub with a raw, underground atmosphere and a reasonably priced (albeit simple) choice of beverages.

Dragonboat fest warehouse party location

You've probably heard by now, but the people behind the mysterious warehouse party have revealed themselves: It's the guys from VOID! The party starts at 11pm and is located at 2/f, 600 Guilin Lu Near Qinzhou Bei Lu (next door to the bathhouse). (2/f, 600 桂林路 宜山路和吴中路中间). Here's the Google map link. Hope everybody has a good time and a HAPPY DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL!

Tonight in Shanghai: Juan "Magic" Atkins

The man who invented one of the most influential forms of modern music plays Shanghai tonight. Juan Atkins, from Detroit, USA, first started tinkering with synthesizers and drum machines back in the early 80s, and played the leading role in creating a brand new genre of futuristic, forward-thinking and cutting-edge music which would later become known as "Techno".

In their first show of the year, the Shanghai's underground house and techno crew, Void, take a break from hosting the likes of Underground Resistance, Robert Hood, DJ Bone and Neil Landstrumm to showcase their own residents with a live, improvised decks and drum machine performance.

2008 Anno Domini / Year of the Rat will be remembered as a difficult one for China in general. Its effects were felt by all, including those involved in Shanghai's numerous musical scenes. It was a year in which artists, promoters and fans had to deal with even more obstacles and barriers than usual in their quest to generate culture and make the whole metropolis live up to its reputation as one of Asia's most dynamic and happening cities.

A highly respected African-American DJ and producer, from the most influential city in the history of electronic music, has criticized the ranking system which is used by many clubs in China, particularly Shanghai, when deciding which DJs to bring to the country, as being useless.

Seems like it's that time of year. First, Void celebrated their one-year anniversary last month. Now Phreaktion, fronted by DJ Siesta, turns three. It's just more proof that drum and bass is not only here, but here to stay. So this weekend, they're giving you the presents by featuring Goldie and DJ Krust over two action-packed nights.

In the past year, local techno strongmen Void have proven to be anything but. They've consistently rocked venues like LoGo and The Shelter every month, bringing one techno legend after another (see: Robert Hood, Traxx, etc). So it's only fitting that they celebrate their first birthday with not one, but TWO notable techno artists.

It's getting later in the month, which means it must be time for another Void techno extravaganza at The Shelter. Continuing the "Techno Pioneer" theme from Robert Hood's slamming set in June, this month the boys are flying in Traxx for a nonstop four-hour set of house & techno insanity.

Ah, 80's music. No, we don't mean that 80's music. We mean Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy inventing new art forms at dueling nightclubs in Chicago. From their respective perches at The Warehouse and The Music Box, these pioneers of music transformed soul, disco, R&B, and funk into what's now known as house music.

There was nothing at all minimal about Robert Hood's set at The Shelter on Saturday night. After three-plus hours of 145+ BPM techno, the entire dancefloor was sweaty and exhausted. Yet somehow, everybody was cheering for more when Hood left the decks around 4 AM. It was definitely the most aggressive set we have ever heard at The Shelter — and we want more, dammit!

Man, how time flies. When Shanghaiist interviewed Void co-founder (and occasional Shanghaiist contributor) Shanghai_Ultra in February, the first thing he talked (or rather, gushed) about was that he'd just confirmed a certain Robert Hood to play Shanghai in June. In fact, you'll see him mention it in the answer to the second-to-last question.

Local techno goons Void are back on a mission to bring you some quality electronic music. Crew chief Cameron Wilson was serious when he spoke about extending his love of techno beyond lao wai. To prove his point, Void is hosting an all-Chinese lineup of serious techno DJs.

Are you starved for techno? Real, honest-to-gosh techno? Well, Shanghai's Void crew has you covered. Several times a month they fill up LOgO and The Shelter to bring you the foot-tappinest, head-noddinest, neck-snappinest techno you ever could lay ears on. They've showcased both DJ Nomadico and Jason Hodges in Shanghai, and this Saturday March 1st they bring a little bit of Detroit and Berlin to The Shelter.

Feeling a little "under the weather" (hah!) from all the snow we're getting? Those rapscallions over at Void have just the answer for you. On Saturday night, they're bringing respected house music veteran Jason Hodges to drop some bombs at The Shelter.
