A new Twist for Shanghai's dessert scene

Twist is a tiny little depot that specializes in cold Taiwanese desserts. They've got smoothies and juices, but what you really need to go to Twist for is the shaved ice. Though we're sure there are similar offerings sprinkled around the Taiwanese enclaves Hongqiao/Gubei, we're positive that in Shanghai proper, Twist has the freshest and most authentic ingredients meant to sit atop a mound of shaved ice.

Live Bar opens Weihai Lu branch

This is an exclusive sneak preview of Live Bar's new Weihai Lu branch, opening this Friday. Yep, while Soma's head honchos are over in Japan trying to persuade the people behind MAO to part with their cash for a Shanghai livehouse and while Yuyintang continues to pull in regular packed crowds, Live Bar have sneaked in and taken over a downtown location of their own.

Many thanks to studiozero for bringing Ramona Cordova to Shanghai and introducing his music to us. Last night's performance was one of the best musical experiences we've had in half a decade in Shanghai — the guy plays a mean acoustic guitar and his songs are painfully beautiful. We weren't sure what we would think about the falsetto he sometimes uses, but it worked. We actually think we like him better live than on his CD (which we bought after the show).

But the address is not what had us perplexed. It was all the naked mannequins in the window, and the rows of empty hangers neatly, um, hanging on the wall. At first we assumed it was an underwear shop still waiting for the underwear to arrive. Then weeks passed and then a month, and we guessed it might be a new boutique based on The Emperor's New Clothes -- you know, that just might work here.

We just noticed a street food that may not be new, but it is new to us. We spotted it last night just outside our neighborhood (we were walking to dinner at Guyi ... fantastic Hunan cuisine) and made a mental note to check it out today. What caught our eye on Weihai Lu near Yan'an was the vertical spit and the man shaving off juicy slices of pork (gyro style) with a long blade. We had not seen this before in Shanghai, but then again we didn't see our first Tujia pizza stand until last weekend.

China has embraced Christmas. Shanghaiist knows this because last year on Christmas Eve we left a beer and a plate of snacks out for Santa (or his Chinese equivalent, Dun Che Lao Ren), and in the morning they were gone. Unless that was our roommate stumbling in from the Dragon Club at 6 am.

Rainy season in Shanghai and sweltering heat takes many of us into the air conditioned confines of our apartments for recreation. Sick of DVDs? Why not venture into the newest home video games? (Shanghaiist sure has.) Now that we are all officially "victims of piracy," just blame the whole mess on those wascally Westerners, and gaming can be cheaper then ever.
