lynn_dimsum.jpgIt wasn't that long ago that Shanghaiist headed straight to Crystal Jade in Xintiandi for our regular weekend dim sum brunch. Since then, however, our new loyalties lie with two restaurants closer to headquarters. Our first impressions of Lynn back when it opened early last year was that customers were paying the bulk of the price premium for its sleek, modern decor and presentation rather than the quality of its traditional Shanghainese fare. However, dim sum lovers have been flocking to Lynn for their weekend all-you-can-eat dim sum menu, and for good reason. For 68 RMB, one can indulge on a free-flow of traditional Cantonese and Shanghainese favorites. Not a bad price, considering ordering a la carte for a single serving of hot and sour soup will run about half of that (and yes, the soup is also on the all-you-can eat menu).

Mediterraneo is really a restaurant rather than a bar, but we were curious to check the place out, having known Sunny and his various former work locations over the past few years. Food wise, prices are up there with Mount Everest, so any food critics wanting to drop in had better ensure someone else is picking up the tab. Drink prices are generally 'Bundish' or a tad more. Bottled beers start from RMB40, with a pint of Carlsberg costing a whopping RMB60. There are also wines by the glass from RMB48, most cocktails at RMB58, with martinis at RMB68. Standard spirits are mostly RMB40-45. There is, however, a 4-8pm happy hour during which all standard drinks, excluding wine and champagne, are half price. The extensive wine list (150+ labels) is weighted towards French and Italian vineyards. There is a spacious upstairs bar and lounge, suitable for functions, which is more low key than the super swish ground floor dining room. Decore in this lounge is actually rather tacky, including faux fire places. In warmer months, diners can enjoy the huge garden or the large upstairs terrace. The whole villa dates back to the 1920s and was one of the many properties owned by Soo Mei Ling (check). Mediterraneo was established a couple of years ago by Marziano Palli, who was briefly the personal chef for Mikhail Gorbachev (if that's any recommendation). Palli also owns and manages six restaurants in Russia. For special occasions and functions this place is worth considering, just remember to bring your gold credit card.

Since Thursday, mallrats visiting Citic Plaza on Nanjing road may have noticed the greeting card and painting exhibit on the ground floor, right across from McDonald's. We were struck by how atypically childlike the artwork was, and then we found out why: they were all produced by children. The event is called the "Share Your Love" Art Charity program and is organized and hosted by the SMIC Private School in Pudong. We'll let the website...

Still looking for something to do for Halloween? Here are a few parties that should be worth checking out. If you are stuck hanging around People's Square head over to the MOCA where you will find (besides interesting art) a wicked Halloween party featuring lots of killer tunes from Bananas Soundsystem. For those who aren't keen on going downtown, head out to Xujiahui where Harley's Bar will host Banana Monkey and more Banana DJ music. At Logo bar 3 bands are going to dress up as the Misfits, Sex Pistols and Ramones and churn out some gnarly tunes. Billed Punks for Monks, all proceeds from ticket sales will go to a charity helping the monks in Burma.

An exhibition on Antoni Gaudi in Shanghai? It sounded too good to be true. Held in MoCA, from August 19th to October 5th, "Cosmos Gaudi, Architecture, Geometry and Design" is definitely worth the visit though.

Since the family was once again in town, we decided to have dinner, not at Jade on 36 this time, but at what is maybe Shanghai's most famous restaurant of Shanghainese food (with a Sichuan twist, according to this site): Meilongzhen. We first tried this place two years ago, and then again last April, but this time we went to their branch accross the street, on the 6th floor of the Westgate mall (which incidentally is called in Chinese Meilongzhen Guangchang 梅龙镇广场). For 2 months starting last April, the old restaurant was closed for refurbishment, and only its branch was open.

Shanghaiist wants to spread the word about an upcoming charity event this Saturday night organised by members of Shanghai's Flickr community. Local Flickr identities ShanghaiSky, ThomasTribe, OppoHash (among others*) have organised a fund-raising night for local student charity, Shanghai Sunrise.

A Shanghai Daily story provides example number 1,029,349 why the Shanghai real estate market is so ridiculously inflated. With 47 square meter, semi-serviced studio apartments at Shanghai Centre going for $2,300 a month, it's no wonder Shanghai consistently manages to rank as one of the most expensive cities in the world ... all with the help of clueless foreign companies throwing piles of money at employee housing. According to the story:
