Yesterday afternoon, Shanghaiist noticed on its Twitter stream that some China-based users were having problems accessing the newly redesigned (wonderful in fact) Danwei site. Blocked blogger, The Weifeng Radish, noted it can only be accessed by an anonymising proxy. Prolific Shanghai blogger and journalist Fons Tuinstra over at The China Herald popped out a post musing about their situation.
Shanghaiist is usually not one to promote bands... mainly because we just haven't seen any lately that we like... but we were in Beijing this weekend and caught a show by Beautiful Pharmacy, a folksy band consisting of two Chinese and two Kazakh musicians (insert Borat joke here... or not). We talked briefly with one of the members who mentioned they would be in Shanghai this weekend playing at 4Live. We immediately thought this show would be perfect for our readers; Shanghaiist was certainly put in a trance and found ourselves tapping our feet despite ourselves. Most of the songs we heard over the weekend were in Kazakh... or whatever language they speak over there. The crowd leaned heavily on the hippie side (this being Beijing) but their hypnotizing music should appeal to everyone.
Shanghaiist once visited Madame Tussauds in London after a big night of Theakston’s Old Peculier and, while sitting ashen-faced and stupefied in a chair, was mistaken for one of the exhibits by two elderly ladies. We’re not sure who they thought they were looking at, but it sure as hell wasn’t Brad Pitt.
Admitted Luddite and one-time Shanghaiist contributor Paul French sent Shanghaiist, and several others, this email recently (or, knowing Paul, he had his secreatry send it). We thought we'd share:
