4-year-old survives 16-story fall from Shanghai high-rise!

Keeping up with the terrifying trend this summer of glass and toddlers tumbling (or being thrown) off buildings - and almost as crazy as that one lady catching a falling baby a few months ago - a 4-year-old miraculously survived a fall from a 16-floor apartment in Shanghai on Sunday. His fall was broken by the windshield and front seat of a car, which probably means if he'd been a few centimeters to either side it would be a different story. According to Shanghai Daily, "the boy suffered injuries and was reported in stable condition. The boy fell from the apartment window when his mother reportedly was using the toilet." more ›

Look out! "Glass bombs" falling from Shanghai skyscrapers

Shanghai Daily is reporting what might just be the most disturbing bit of public safety news so far this summer: Shanghai's skyscraper windows have started cracking and crashing to the ground. We're not sure how we missed this, but three separate incidents happened on the same day last month, causing the city to review regulations concerning high-rise glass maintenance. As it turns out, there are none. more ›

Lots of bar re-openings this week

FYI: Bar Rouge is re-opening after its three-week-long renovation TONIGHT just in time for F1 afterparties. If that Bund establishment really isn't your thing - how about Windows Scoreboard? The grand re-opening is on Saturday and includes a free open bar from 9 to 11 followed by a late night happy hour. UPDATE: Actually, they're holding back on the opening. Windows Too will carry that deal in its place though! And if THAT doesn't please you... well, the new Rhumerie Bounty on Yongfu Lu (right on top of Shelter) should have opened by now. Go check that out. more ›

Windows Scoreboard closing and reopening this weekend

Windows Scoreboard, the cheapest sports bar in town, is closing up their shop on Huaihai Lu this Saturday. Before you turn on the waterworks though, this doesn't mean they're gone for good. They'll be taking over the newly reopened Jing'an location while they finalize their digssomewhere else, says Smart Shanghai. And besides, all the moving around just means more parties. The WinScor Huaihai closing party is this Saturday and on Sunday, WinToo celebrates becoming WinScorToo by offering free beer from 10pm to 11pm. more ›

Longevitist: 10 Shanghai bars/restaurants that have lasted the decade

Longevitist: 10 Shanghai bars/restaurants that have lasted the decade

In a city like Shanghai, new openings are aplenty and sudden closings even more so. It seems that the evanescent nature of the city's restaurants and bars make it so that when something stays open for over two years, it ought to be counted as an old stand by. We are, of course, talking about expat establishments - there are tons of old Chinese restaurants that have stood the test of time, probably because the Shanghainese Shanghai population is a little less transient. And yet, somehow some of these places have managed to survive the volatility of the city. They may have changed their appearance, they may have moved, but all and all they're still here, giving anybody who hasn't been here since 2000 something at least somewhat familiar to cling to. We tip our hat off to them - for better or worse, they haven't quit for at least ten years. Listed in no particular order or importance, ten places that have been here since at least 1999. more ›

Windows 7 "out" now for 20RMB thanks to software pirates

In a not too surprising turn of events, Microsoft 7 has been "released" early to the Chinese market. The New York Times reports that a week before the official Windows OS release date, electronics markets all across Shanghai are bursting with copies of the new software for around just 20RMB, not to mention that the software has been available on Taobao for weeks already. Microsoft has already lowered the price for their software to reflect Chinese wallets, but at 399RMB, its still 20 times more expensive than its pirated counterpart. While we'll be good kids and buy the real version, we bet locals will have a hard time justifying 399 yuan versus 20 yuan when it's practically the same thing. That's like a different of 379 baozi! more ›

Ask Men: China is world's 4th most horny country

Ask Men: China is world's 4th most horny country

So China has been named by Ask Men as the fourth horniest country in the world - thanks to the 5000 sex shops recently opened in Beijing, its status as largest producer of sex toys, and the fact that it has a SEXPO (which we're guessing they didn't visit - because, really, it was totally a boner killer). Most hilarious was its recommendations of horny places to visit in Shanghai - Bar Rouge, Zapata's and Windows. We think perhaps they're mistaking horny for white, old and sleazy. Yes, the difference is subtle, but we maintain that it's pretty solidly there. We could be wrong, but we're assuming Ask Men was thinking more along the lines of Austin Powers and less that chunky Brit with the wife and kids across the ocean. (Thanks @tuzhonghua!) more ›

Windows Underground: Hipsters welcome

Anyone who's into rock knows that Windows Underground is the most reliable place to hear good live music at the weekend right now. The new Nanjing Xi Lu venue took the baton from Tembo as Windows' live messenger (arf!) a few months ago and has been packing them in from day one. more ›

Live Music: Second Hand Rose, Wang Wei, God Daedalist and Crazy Mushroom
