Brad Ferguson blogs about his intro to Shanghai music scene

Freshly fired from Windows Underground, Brad finally has time to blog again. Here's a snippet from "My Shanghai Story (Part 1)", about the Texan's introduction to Shanghai's underground live music scene: "About a month later John, some other friends, and I went to our first real underground rock show at the Sus2 Music Factory (a real factory!) where Reflector (反光镜) and Loudspeaker (扩音器) played a late-afternoon show to a crowd of pierced/mohawked/Dr Marten’d students. I remember complaining that Loudspeaker’s guitarist was out of tune, and when I got home I downloaded Reflector’s EP from their website. Their song 'Wuliao Contingent' (无聊军队) is still in rotation on my iPod." more ›

Windows Underground fires its manager over his decision to hire Chinese bands

Windows Underground fires its manager over his decision to hire Chinese bands

Yesterday, we learned that our friend (and ex-Shanghaiist contributor) Brad Ferguson had been fired from his role as manager of Windows Underground. We asked him some questions about the recent developments and he agreed to let us publish them "as long as it doesn't make me look like an asshole. I still don't think I did anything wrong, but maybe it looks different to other people." more ›

Olympics kill Super VC and Yuyintang shows

All hail the fun killers. In their infinite wisdom (idiots) the powers that be have deemed live music to be threat to national security and two casualties are Yuyintang and Windows Underground. The folk scheduled for tonight at YYT has been moved to Dream Factory and everything else is up in the air until after the Olympics. Super VC won't be able to play at Windows tonight and STD are trying to find a location for them to play tomorrow, so look for updates on that. more ›

Live Music: Mountain Men, Super VC and plenty of folk-pop

Finally, we are back. Unlike the unfortunates who fell victim to visa restrictions our reason for being absent had more to do with laziness from too much heat. Being a pastie white red-head, the sun is not our friend. So what is happening this weekend? Well, not much, but there are a few shows. Chaos Mind and 5-pointed Star, two of Shanghais few metal bands will be playing at Yuyintang, while Live bar is letting 3 new bands take the stage. Who knows, maybe one of the bands will actually be worth the trip to Yangpu. more ›

Windows Underground: Hipsters welcome

Windows Underground: Hipsters welcome

Anyone who's into rock knows that Windows Underground is the most reliable place to hear good live music at the weekend right now. The new Nanjing Xi Lu venue took the baton from Tembo as Windows' live messenger (arf!) a few months ago and has been packing them in from day one. more ›

Videos: Second Hand Rose at Windows Underground Opening

Shanghai's newest live music venue doesn't look too bad for a start, especially with veteran folk rock band, Second Hand Rose working the crowd. We like it that it is spacious enough for everyone, from the pool-playing dudes to music junkies prancing about near the stage. Did we mention that the wait staff will take your drinks order right where you stand and then serve it to you pronto? We like this very much! more ›
