Watch: Girl swallowed up by sidewalk sinkhole in Xi'an

Sinkholes, sinkholes, everywhere. An unsuspecting young woman in Xi'an found herself suddenly swallowed up by a sidewalk which caved in as soon as she stepped onto it. Fortunately, a cab driver who was passing by witnessed the accident and came immediately to her rescue, as seen in the surveillance video above. However, it wasn't until firefighters arrived on the scene much later that the girl was pulled out to safety. In a similar accident earlier this month in Beijing, another young woman suffered 90% burns after falling into hot water from exploded pipes underground after the pavement beneath her suddenly caved in. Road rage piano student executed for stabbing woman to death

The highly publicized trial of Yao Jiaxin, the 21 year old piano student who stabbed a woman to death after knocking her over with his car, finally has come to an end. Yao lost his supreme court appeal and was executed today says The Guardian. Yao was studying at the Xian Conservatory of Music when he collided with 26-year-old Zhang Miao described by Yao in his court testimony as a "peasant woman". She only suffered minor injuries but Yao became enraged when he saw her jotting down his license plate number, pulled out a knife and stabbed her eight times until she died. Yao's middle class background sparked significant resentment and hatred online and was often portrayed to be a class controversy similar to "My Dad is Li Gang"-gate. more ›

A 2,400-year-old sealed pot of "bone soup" (possibly) was discovered while digging up ground for an extension of Xi'an's airport. According to Chinese archeologists, it's the "first discovery of bone soup in Chinese archaeological history" and "will play an important role in studying the eating habits and culture of the Warring States Period (475-221 BC)." more ›

This Chinese shepherd has found a novel way to both save money on a sheep dog and to keep his flock in line at the same time — by showing his flock a picture of a wolf! Ananova quotes a man from Xi'an by the name of Du Hebing who tells Huashang Daily he shot the picture by chance:

"After visiting Qinling Wild Animal Park, on the way home I saw a group of sheep walking along the road with a man holding a picture following behind them," he said. more ›
