At 8am this morning, an assortment of employees from a cleaning company refused to perform their regular morning custodial duties at the Xinhua Hospital in Shanghai's Yangpu district, and assembled for a strike over low wages.

Watch: Thugs try to forcibly remove residents in Yangpu, Shanghai
While we've heard of people being thrown out of their homes in other districts and counties, there seems to be the thought that Shanghai is just too civilized to play host to this kind of brutish behavior. Not so. Just a little before the start of the New Year, residents of Tongbei Lu in the Yangpu District were awakened in the middle of the night by dozens of helmeted workers armed with metal bars and bricks. Le Monde found a video of the attack.
PSA: Don't walk near construction areas.
Walking near construction areas can be a dangerous endeavor, a fact that holds especially true in China. Around 5PM yesterday, 3 passers-by were injured when a fence suddenly fell off a construction area on Huangxin Lu in the Yangpu district.
Our Fisherman's Wharf ... not to be confused with that Fisherman's Wharf
OK, you know we love to slag off Shanghai Daily articles even though we know it's an essentially meaningless thing to do so. Old habits die hard. We just finished reading one about the planned Fisherman's Wharf in Yangpu district, which we are told is
Unlike its namesake in San Fransico with sea views and sea lions, the local FW will be built on the banks of the Huangpu River in Yangpu District, according to the district officials.OK, so no sea views and no sea lions, but what will it have?:
The outlook of its main buildings will resemble various kinds of fish to commemorate the city's history. Shanghai was evolved from a small fishing village about 1,500 years ago.Fish-shaped buildings? And a fishing museum? At least some Christians will be pleased. And they are going to be building ferries too—"pleasure ferries", they're called. Hmmm.
Death by sweaty computer!
A 20-YEAR-OLD student was electrocuted by his computer this morning in Shanghai's Yangpu District, Eastday.com reported.more ›
The complicated issue of China's abandoned children
I turned to several government departments, including the local police station and the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau Yangpu District branch, but no one would solve the problem. I know the residence problem will affect my daughter's whole life, so I still asked authorities for help, but I was shocked by the result. They suggested I send her to an orphanage.
Anticipate a date with Line 8
An industry source in this Metrofans thread reveals that internal estimates for the opening date of Metro Line 8 (M8) have moved up to October 31st from the previous estimate of December 28.
X Games Asia coming to Shanghai May 3-5
We hinted at this several days ago, but we didn't say more because the story we found didn't include some crucial information (like a location). But yesterday a friend who works for ESPN.com forwarded us the event's press release, which you can read here. There we learn that "[m]ore than 200 of the world’s top action sports athletes from more than 20 countries and five continents will compete in the three-day event and feature multiple disciplines, including Aggressive In-Line Skate, Skateboard, BMX Freestyle, Sport Climbing as well as a Moto X demonstration." But more importantly, we find out where all of this will happen — Yangpu District's Jiangwan Stadium.

Indie rock weekend
The Halloween weekend is coming up, and the indie rock scene is here to answer Shanghailander cravings for unsigned talent with several shows lined up:
Rock lives on at Live Bar
With Harley's Bar accused of stealing equipment and Hong Doudou no longer interested in hosting live music, the Shanghai underground rock scene has moved from Xujiahui to Yangpu District. Last night's No Beijing concert marked the official opening of Live Bar, a medium-sized venue in a quiet neighborhood near Fudan University. More than a hundred people, mostly students, showed up -- which was surprising considering the lackluster turnout at previous events.
Great, something else to distract Shanghai's drivers
It was just a matter of time. Shanghai now has its first drive-thru restaurant -- excuse us, "auto shuttle restaurant," as Xinhua likes to call it. The "cylinder-shaped three-storey building" is owned by the Shanghai Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Co. Ltd., so we're guessing it's a drive-thru KFC. The English version of the story doesn't say where the restaurant is -- details, details -- but the Chinese version tells us it's on Kongjiang Lu, which appears to be a pretty long street in Yangpu District. They didn't offer us a cross-street. (Any intrepid Shanghaiist readers want to hunt this down for us? We would, but we don't have a car. Nor do we eat KFC.)
Now if we could just get the sun to come out between November and April
Adding to the list of miracles that are to happen in the city before the year 2010 is the installation of solar panels across the city. As part of a three-year plan, over 100,000 square meters of panels will be put on the roofs of office and apartment buildings, universities and nursing homes in Shanghai.
