The lovely Anna J's stint doing Wednesdays at the Glamour Bar was interrupted last month when she was injured and put in a big cast for a while. However, she is better now, and ready to rock the Bund once again every Wednesday starting from June 13. Her band is fab as before, consisting of EJ Parker on the upright bass and Steve Sweeting on the piano. The sound is great in the room, and the house is always packed by the second set so get there early to find a good seat. Or just call ahead and reserve one.

Shanghai. It is all happening. Here's the proof:
Don’t panic yet, but seriously, it might be inappropriate to say "Bund 18" in the future. According to this Eastday report (in Chinese), one of the 2006 government projects -- cleaning up the city's street names -- is going to be finished by the end of this year. There are 838 roads involved in this project: 146 road names are going to be written off, 154 road names are going to be changed and 225 road names are going to be prefixed. (We've checked the street names that will be written off and fortunately they are all in suburbs, like Qingpu, Fengxian and Baoshan)
The two photos above are from Shanghai. The second, we think, is Shanghai Railway Station. Barbieri's work comes to our city as part of the Shanghai Biennale and the Year of Italy in China. More Biennale events are listed here.
A few weeks back, Shanghaiist batted around the question, “what would you suggest to someone with only one night in Shanghai?” Think we just found our answer. In the June issue of Conde Nast Traveller, the magazine highlighted 20 locales worldwide as the latest additions to its “journeys of a lifetime” series. One in particular was right in our backyard, figuratively speaking of course. In an entry titled “Dine a deux at the upper Cupola”, Traveller featured a magnificent restaurant/dining room, The Cupola, located on the city’s historic waterfront, offering a sumptuous dining experience with equally breath-taking visuals to match. This is what the magazine had to say about The Cupola:
Shanghaiist -- who enjoys a stroll along the city's famous waterfront -- feels a slight sense of relief when reading this piece of news (in Chinese). The City Inspecting Team (城管) of Huangpu District has announced that since late January they've spent 15 hours a day patrolling the Bund in an attempt to reduce the activities of beggars and shoe polishers. (Anyone notice that the number of beggars seems to have decreased recently?)
Jim Gaffigan is not a name that registers with most people. But when you see his face, it's "Oh yeah, I know that guy" (WARNING: This reaction may only occur in Americans). Shanghaiist can confirm that Gaffigan is a legitimately funny guy -- and we don't just say that about anyone. He's appeared in 31 movies and is a regular on the American late night talk show circuit. In 2000, David Letterman handpicked Gaffigan for a lead role in a comedy series called Welcome to New York, a show we admittedly have never heard of (apparently, it didn't last very long). But maybe you have heard of Sex and the City or That 70s Show. He's been in those, too. Oh, and the Law & Order franchise? He's appeared in three different incarnations of that, and once he played a rapist, so you know he's got range. Shanghaiist has also enjoyed his work in many, many television commercials, although we can't really think of any specific ones right now. Maybe one was for Rolling Rock beer? So, anyway, we like this guy. But we're not going to pay RMB 250 to see him do stand-up at Three on the Bund's Third Degree Music Lounge at 9 tonight. That's just ridiculously expensive.
