Pencil This In is all the things you’d want to do this Monday through Thursday. This week we have graphic novel illustrations by Arco at Xin Dan Wei, a men’s night with free beer for all the guys, and a short film screening at Dada. Besides that, there’s a nice charity event organized jointly with the Italian Consulate, Chamber of Commerce and other Italian institutions. You’ll be entertained with Italian live music in form of a competition, delicious food from Bella Italia, and all the money you spend goes to a charity! Read on for all the details, or check out our calendar for more!
Ake’s Illustrations @ Xin Dan Wei (Yongjia50)
This exhibition features illustrations that the Chinese artist Arco (阿科) made for his two graphic novels Cement Bloom and Wildcats Investigation (the latter of which is a collection of short stories and going to be published in early 2013). His drawings feature clean, sharp lines and strong contrasts, and as the name of the new novel hints at, a lot of them depict stray cats in the city. According to Arco, he wrote the Cement Bloom while he was cast away on an uninhabited island for two years until a cargo ship rescued him. While we have no idea what’s up with that story, it certainly made us curious and we recommend to drop by. Until December 31, 2012.

Men’s Night or the REAL Ladies Night @ Memo
Guys, another event like this was long overdue, now wasn’t it. One hour free flow draft beer is in for the guys, plus you can buy cocktails for the girls at a special price. For the girls it should be fun, too. After all, you’ll have some male company and not mostly other tipsy chicks trying to snatch a drink like on other ladies nights.
7-8pm free flow beer for guys // Memo Bar & Restaurant // Jiashan Market, No. 37, Lane 550 Shanxi Nan Lu, near Shaoxin Lu (陕西南路550弄37号, 近绍兴路)
Cinemashup #15: Twisted Christmas Special! @ DADA
Cinemashup is a night full of curious, bizarre and funny short films and video projects at Dada. Artsy and entertaining, with free popcorn just like for Sub-Cinema. You are free to submit your own works for display here.

CHARITY: Italian Singing Contest @ MAO Livehouse
This Thursday night, the “Festival della Canzone Italiana di Shanghai” will take place for the 5th time. Ten singers, both Italian and Chinese and all non-professional, will battle each other with Italian songs. The Italian live band “Nello and the Cats” will be responsible for the background music, and there will be a lucky draw with Italian brand goods as prices. The entrance ticket includes Italian food and drinks as well, and all the income will be donated to the Shanghai Charity Foundation (the charity institution of the Shanghai Municipality) for the Shaggan project to help mentally disabled people. If you wanna support this great event, you can get your tickets in many Italian restaurants and bars in town. For more information on ticket vendors, please send the organizers an email.

Traffic Light Party @ Bar Rouge
Girls Night Out gets a weekly
theme product placement event. This week they will have bags and accessories from George Gina & Lucy, a German brand that most of the people in Shanghai are probably not familiar with. At least I’ve never seen those bags with their signature carabiners here – and haven’t missed their sight either. Anyway, besides that, they’ll hand out three types of different wristbands for single, taken and undecided (to make it easier for the guys to identify potential game?). The password “MVP” gets you in for free until 00:30, but at least the girls wanna come much earlier than that, as you’ll be treated with free cocktails from 9:30-11:30pm!
Free entrance till 00:30 with password “MVP” // Bar Rouge // 7/F, 18 Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu, near Nanjing Dong Lu (中山东一路18号7楼, 近南京东路)
