91 year old Mrs Ye was beaten and forced out of her house in Nanjing’s Xiaguan district yesterday, after asking her daughter-in-law for a bowl of porridge. Neighbours found her shivering in the street and reported it to the police. One of her neighbours posted the incident online at midday on Tuesday.
Reports say her eyes were beaten black and blue and her legs were beaten by her son with an iron rod. Once out in the street she rested on a nearby flowerbed shivering from head to toe, where she was found by neighbours.
The incident was later reported online by one of her neighbours, claiming that Old Ye said her bruises were from her son and daughter-in-law who had beaten her fiercely because she said to her daughter in law: “I’ve eaten noodles for 22 years, I’d like a bowl of porridge.” Her daughter in law turned on her and started to beat her and swear at her “You obstinate pig-head, take it back!”
One of Old Ye’s neighbours, Mrs Cao, told police furiously: “You don’t have to be completely filial towards her, but at the very least you should feed her and dress her in clean clothes, just look at Old Ye’s clothes she wears all day, they are as dirty as a barbers wash rag!”
Mrs Cao went on to tell police that Old Ye has been locked out of the house at night before. “She’s been kicked before, you can hear her crying out in pain.”
In response to the neighbours’ accusations, Old Ye’s son Mr Wang defended himself: “She crawls around all day, these injuries are her own fault.” Mr Wang also complained that Old Ye had scolded him and his wife for having had a daughter this year.
Police advised Mr Wang to take his mother home and to wait for all the family to gather before coming to a resolution, and if one could not be reached that Old Ye be sent to an old people’s home.
