Midweek Music Preview is a rundown of all the events happening on stages across Shanghai. Christmas is only once a year, to pay tribute to the occasion, this week promises to be a special one with some fantastic local bands on the stages! Don’t miss out Tookoo at YYT on Friday night, Cold Fairyland on Saturday and the big Christmas concert at MAO with Da Fresh and Top Floor Circus! Fans of classical music and dance can look forward to Swan Lake and Li Tang at SOAC, and the Harlem Gospel Choir also come over to sing Whitney Houston. Merry Christmas! And if that’s still not enough, head over to our calendar for more.
Harlem Gospel Choir @ Shanghai Oriental Art Center
The world-famous choir from New York City is going to perform a selection of Whitney Houston songs. Here’s the full set list.

King Size Presents: The Love Hangover with TOOKOO & The Reason @ Yuyintang
Twin bros Xiaochuan and Xiaoquan from Tookoo have been working hard to form the King Size family of likeminded bands, and it’s a sure winner that Tookoo and The Reason unite for double trouble at YYT tonight. The Reason are some scratchy folks, they certainly know how to make some noise and singer Achang is skilled at tormening his voice chords. Expect a more gentle treatment from Tookoo, who can manage to sound like the Chinese Jimmy Eat World just to kick your butt in the next moment with a snappier sound. Two skilled and fun bands – you don’t wanna miss out this concert if you can handle the combination of emo and alternative (Tookoo) and screamo/metal (The Reason). My pick for the week! Support bands: Before The Daylight / Forget And Forgive / Hidden Agenda.

Progressive musicians Cold Fairyland take over the stage of Yuyintang for a “Good Bye, 2012” concert. The Shanghai-based band that skillfully merges Asian influences with the sound of Western symphonic rock and classical instruments has been a long time favourite in Shanghai, so make sure youcheck them out if you haven’t done so already, they’re great musicians.

‘Rock City’ Christmas Eve Concert @ MAO Livehouse
MAO’s very own take on a cheerful Christmas Eve. It’s gonna be rocky, but that goes without saying. Top Floor Circus and Da Fresh will be at your service with live music. Both Chinese bands play very approachable rock. TFC is pretty straightforward alternative, while Da Fresh certainly live up to their name with their poppier synthie sound and clean vocals. They’re really good at what they’re doing. Probably a good combination for Christmas. In order to spread even more Christmas spirit, there will be a lucky draw with some awesome prices: 3 iPads AND 20 four days 3 nights Hong Kong – Macao trips for two – wow!
