Li Na, the Chinese tennis superstar with more personality and humour than ten Andy Murrays, is on course to become the highest earning female athlete in the world.
Despite Li’s loss to Belarus’s Victoria Azarenka in the final of the Australian Open, the Chinese number one is smashing her opponents off the court. Li’s sponsorship deal with Nike is unique in that it allows her to display two additional logos alongside the familiar swoosh, currently Mercedez-Benz and insurance giant Taikang Life.
Since bursting onto the world scene in 2011 when she made it to the Australian Open final, Li has attracted numerous sponsorship deals from brands keen to reach the vast Chinese market. When she won the French Open later that year she reportedly ran out of time to agree to all the endorsement deals that were offered to her. Then, Li was second in earnings only to Maria Sharapova, but following further success and international attention, the 30 year old may soon overtake her Russian rival.
