Millionaire philanthropist and fame whore with a cause Chen Guangbiao has applied to legally change his name to ‘Chen Empty Plate,’ his latest publicity stunt to call attention to the problem of China’s excessive food waste.
On Sunday evening, Chen, accompanied by a camera crew, went to a police station in Nanjing to submit his request to change his name to Chen Guangpan (meaning ’empty plate’).
Speaking to the officer behind the desk, Chen explained that his main reason for the name change was to promote the “Operation Empty Plate” movement that has gained much attention in recent weeks. Announcing his new name on his official Weibo account, Chen tacked on a list of other causes: calling on people not to set off firecrackers during Spring Festival and wedding celebrations, and to conserve water and electricity.
The officer who received Chen’s application replied that such a request must be made at a police station within his registered hukou, and said that the documents would be passed along to the right authorities. Chen and the rest of the world will then have to wait 15 working days to discover whether ‘Brother Biao’ will now be ‘Brother Plate.’
