Sina has released some frankly staggering Spring Festival statistics. In the first second of the new year there were 34,977 posts on Weibo, a new record for the microblogging service. Over 700,000 posts were made within the first minute of the Year of the Snake.
At the time of writing, 101,186,893 ‘red envelopes’ have been sent by Weibo users to one and other, as part of a promotion in which users can win prizes by sending and receiving electronic versions of the traditional Spring Festival gifts.
CCTV’s Spring Festival gala, which featured Celine Dion, also tore it up on Weibo:
During the seven hours of state TV’s traditional “Spring Gala” show, some of Sina Weibo’s 400 million registered users live-tweeted the TV show using the “chunwan” hashtag. In total, that hashtag was used 19,582,947 times while the show was on air. Perhaps everyone was wowed by the appearance of Celine Dion, who sang her Titanic tune before launching into a duet, in Chinese, of a jazzed-up Chinese folk song.
