Pencil This In is all the things you’d want to do this Monday through Thursday. Students get lucky with cheap beer at Adam’s and cineasts get lucky with an 80s vampire flick at Dada. For those who prefer their films less bloody, Virgo screens ‘Pretty Woman’ on Thursday night. Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre present their brand-new co-production together with dark punk cabaret ‘The Tiger Lillies’. Read on for all the details, or check out our calendar for more!
Student’s Special @ Adam’s Bar
Student friendly garden of Eden themed bar (mostly the name, the interior to a lesser extent…) offers beers for a very friendly 10 kuai if you can flash your student ID at them.
6pm // Adam’s // Lane 5-2, 448 Xinhua Lu, near Dingxi Lu (新华路448弄5号2座, 近定西路)
Sub-Cinema: Near Dark @ DADA
Oddball vampire flic from the late eighties that drowned a little bit in the mass of other unorthodox vampire movies such as the awesome ‘The Lost Boys’ and ‘Fright Night’. ‘Near Dark‘ mixes elements of Western, Vampire and Road Movie genres and stands on its own two feet, although the basic idea may sound rather familiar. Young countryside boy Caleb gets lucky with the attractive Mae. Crazy chick bites him in the neck as a late night goodbye kiss, and a bloody bond between the two starts to form. Caleb is forced to join Mae’s family of nasty bloodsucking highway roamers, who do, well, nasty bloody things.
Free // Doors at 8pm, movie at 9pm // Dada // No. 115 Xingfu Lu, near Fahuazhen Lu (幸福路115号, 近法华镇路)
Come Correct @ The Shelter
Real DJs? Check. Real people? Check. Real Hip Hop? Double check. Wednesday night it’s all old skool hip hop with DJ Caution and T-Plus at Yongfu Lu’s one and only underground grotto.
Free // 10pm // The Shelter // Basement of No. 5 Yongfu Lu, near Fuxing Xi Lu (永福路5号, 近复兴西路)
The Seducer’s Diary @ Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center
Danish-Chinese co-production of Søren Kierkegaard’s ‘The Seducer’s Diary‘, performed in English by Chinese and Danish actors. In addition to that, the play is spiced up with an extravagant flavour: The British enfant terrible of musical bands, Grammy nominee punk cabaret ‘The Tiger Lillies‘ will contribute plenty of R-rated show values. Buy tickets here.
150-380RMB // Daily 7:30pm till March 3, no shows on Mon // Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre // 288 Anfu Lu, near Wukang Lu (安福路288号, 近武康路)
Movie Screening: Pretty Woman @ Virgo
Virgo show Julia Robert’s signature movie as part of their ladies night. Screening starts at 8:30pm, so you better be early if you wanna watch that modern fairytale. After 9:30pm, there will be the usual ladies night specials such as free drinks and snacks.
Free // 8:30pm // Virgo // Laomatou Bldg 11, 505 Zhongshan Nan Lu, near Fuxing Dong Lu (老码头, 中山南路505号11栋, 近复兴东路)
