Library lovers in Shanghai can rest easy, a man accused of stealing 385 books from community libraries has been convicted and received a five month prison sentence.
According to the Shanghai Daily, the convicted man, a “book addict” surnamed Wang, stole 3,200 yuan worth of books between March 2011 and September 2012 from Xuhui District Library and five community libraries.
Wang’s modus operandi was to borrow books, return them, then steal them after they had been scanned into the system. Wang’s plans were foiled when library staff noticed the large number of books missing from the shelves that had last been checked out in his account.
