During a session of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on Monday, comedy/action star Jackie Chan told a panel meeting that Chinese authorities were “too loose in law enforcement.”
Chan continued, hitting his desk and insisting that, “Our law enforcement has to be stricter.” Chan cited his experience travelling abroad as something that made him realize the laxity of Chinese law enforcement.
In the context of the string of stupid, blindly pro-government, and wildly hypocritical things he has said recently, his remarks don’t really seem that bad. While some unnamed religious sects and members of a particular ethnic/religious minority might disagree about the laxness of Chinese police, taken as a point about the universality of rule of law in China, Chan’s remarks make some sense.
Perhaps Chan feels Hong Kong police were too lax with him when he was investigated last December for possessing illegal firearms and grenades.
