March 8 is International Women’s Day! While it may be a mostly ignored event in other countries, office heroines in Shanghai get lucky as quite a few companies release them from their duties in the early afternoon. So what to do with that little bit of freedom and leisure time? We took the liberty of overlooking those venues who are just offering pink drinks to the women who prove they’re women by wearing pink (yes, they exist). Instead, we want to bring your attention to events that matter because they support charities and/or welcome women who don’t feel like wearing barbie colors today (those exist, too).
Lions & Lambs: International Women’s Day Charity Event @ Virgo
This event is tonight, but we just assume this decision was simply made so it coincides with the regular ladies night. As usual, girls will be treated with free drinks, pizza and canapés from 9:30pm till midnight. Guys, you may not steal the free drinks, but you’re also welcome to participate and buy game and lucky draw tickets. To celebrate International Women’s Day accordingly, all the money collected from ticket sales will be donated to the Magnolia Initiative of Care of the Shanghai Women’s Federation, which aims to increase public awareness of gender equality and protection of women and minors.
Free // 9:30pm // Virgo // Laomatou Bldg 11, 505 Zhongshan Nan Lu, near Fuxing Dong Lu (老码头, 中山南路505号11栋, 近复兴东路)

Women’s Day Special Concert @ Yuyintang
Shanghai celebrates International Women’s Day, and YYT puts together a special event for the gals (and everybody else). Longtime favorites Cold Fairyland play their ambient progressive rock, Candy Shop throw in poppy tunes and rap, and last but not least, Second aka (重结晶/Chongjiejing) add more pop rock. A fairly tame selection, so you better not be in the mood for headbanging, girls.
