The ongoing mystery over whether Kim Jong-un’s wife Ri Sol-ju is pregnant or not has been emblematic of the problems of reporting on North Korea. Claims that Ri was knocked up surfaced last October, and seemed to have been confirmed in December. When a noticeably slimmer Ri appeared at a state event in January, reporters pointed to this as evidence that she had given birth. But since this is the DPRK we’re talking about, no one could know for sure. Kim and Ri possibly already have a child together, according to certain sources, and Ri’s weight gain and loss may have been completely unrelated to her lady parts.
Now Dennis Rodman, currently the most knowledgeable foreigner about the Kim family (check that off a list of sentences I never thought I would write) has let it slip that Ri was pregnant, and recently gave birth to a baby girl.
In an interview with one of the UK’s worst tabloids (I’m joking of course, they’re all terrible), Rodman, apparently unaware of
the controversy over who will succeed Kim anything said “[Ri] kept talking about their beautiful baby daughter”.
Speaking to NKNews, DPRK-watcher Michael Madden indicated that Rodman’s claim may be valid, despite the regime’s reticence on announcing the birth: “If it was a boy, [the North Koreans] would have made an announcement.”
