Chinese archaeologists have found the fossilised eggs shells and bones of around 20 unhatched dinosaurs in Yunnan province, near the capital of Kunming.
Holy shit Jurassic Park is going to be real you guys!
Archaeologists found fossilised egg shells and bones from around 20 unhatched young of Lufengosaurus – a long necked dinosaur that could grow up to eight metres long.
They say the embryos have provided a valuable insight into how young dinosaurs developed inside their eggs before they hatched.
Anaylsis has shown that the dinosaurs grew very rapidly inside the eggs compared to modern reptiles, possibly to reduce the risk of the eggs being eaten by predators before they hatched.
All of the eggs were broken and the bones of the developing dinosaurs could be found inside.
Jurassic Park! Jurassic Park! Jurassic Park in China! Isn’t that right, Mr Scientist?
While the discovered collagen is not technically “alive,” it was derived from what once were the dinosaur’s living tissues.
As for retrieving DNA, [project leader Robert Reisz] said, “You never know about what we may be able to find in the fossil record. We are continually breaking new ground.”
“However, resurrecting a dinosaur is out of the question,” he added, reminding that living birds are dinosaurs. Bringing a Jurassic animal into the present could therefore be a disaster, probably worse than what some movies have fictionally predicted. At the very least, such an animal — if it wound up in the wild — could wreck havoc on the existing ecosystem.
Whatever. The fossilised dinosaur eggs were found in the same month that Jurassic Park 3D is out in theatres. Is that fate? I think so.
