Chinese-American investor and Weibo celebrity Charles Xue (aka Xue Manzi) has been detained in Beijing for ‘suspected involvement in prostitution’, SCMP reports.
Xue’s arrest comes during a continued crackdown by police in China’s capital against “online rumour mongers“. One of Xue’s former employees, Qin Zhihui, was arrested earlier this week.
60 year old Xue first came to prominence on Weibo when he launched a campaign drawing attention to the problem of child trafficking in China, he also raised over 100,000 yuan through Weibo ‘micro-donations’ to help a daughter fund her mother’s medical treatment.
After a tip from local residents, officers from the Chaoyang District police department captured Xue along with a 22-year-old woman from Henan Province in a residential compound in northern Beijing, said a post on the official Weibo social media account of Beijing police.
“After questioning, the duo confessed to facts of involvement in prostitution. The police department has by law placed the two under administrative detention,” it said.
Xue has over 12 million followers on Weibo, and is a prominent liberal voice on the social network. Born in Guangdong in 1953, Xue is a naturalised American citizen. The US embassy in Beijing has not commented on his arrest at this time.
