A truck on a Lanzhou highway in Gansu province caught fire earlier this week, causing the sacks of melon seeds it was carrying to spill all over the highway. Upon sight of the accident, residents began pouring in to
assist the driver quickly collect bags and buckets full of seeds to take home, according to media reports.
On the scene, as firefighters tried to put out the flames, residents climbed the piles of seeds with bags and buckets, quickly collecting the spoils and hauling them home. Some even called neighbors to help, according to Want China Times.
“This does not count as looting. We’re just helping pick up the seeds, as the driver does not want them anymore,” said one of the residents collecting the seeds when asked by a reporter if what they were doing was right. The resident then returned home with a bag full of the seeds.
The truck driver told reporters that the 26 tons of seeds were worth around 350,000 yuan.
He said he was too overwhelmed to stop any of the residents and could only stand by and watch as they carried his seeds away.
