Today in Chinese fakes: A giant life-sized replica of the Sphinx has appeared outside of Donggou village, Shijiazhuang city, in Hebei province. The massive monument has attracted much attention from tourists and internet users, and it is repordetly linked to a nearby film and television production center, according to China.huanqiu.com
The giant replica is 60 x 20 meters in size. Unlike the Sphinx in Egypt, the framework of the replica was made of reinforced concrete instead of stones (a decision made probably due to complications with slave labor and/or the invention of the wheel).
A male tourist joked that “People can visit a place of interest like that without going abroad and paying money for a plane ticket, which is awesome.” A female questioned if its broken nose had anything to with construction problem. Then, the male tourist explained, “The Sphinx’s nose was damaged by Islamic tourists in the Middle Ages” which is wrong, but still closer than the “Napoleon’s Army Did It” theory that everyone still seems to believe.
It would really make Chinese onlookers think that they had been to Egypt If they didn’t see pancakes and fruit stalls, local cars and dumpling carts surrounding the Sphinx.
