Over the weekend, a police officer was directing traffic on the busy streets of downtown Shangqiu, Henan province, during a heavy downpour. Out of nowhere, a stranger walked on to the street and held her umbrella above his head to shield him from the blinding rain.
“I told her that following me around was very dangerous,” said Officer Wang Zhiheng. “Thank you big sister, but it’s cold, you should get out of here. But she refused to listen to anything I said. I didn’t know her at all. I was very moved by the experience.”
According to NetEase, Wang’s fellow officer said that he noticed the woman as well, and her actions and smile warmed their hearts while they worked in the rain. In total, the woman helped shield Wang from the rain for 30 minutes, before the downpour turned to a drizzle and she went on her way.
Being a police officer and all, Wang tracked the woman down, learning that her name was Wang Yanyan and that she owns a small shop in the area.
“I run a shop here and I always see police officers on duty, no matter how hot in the summer or how cold in the winter, they are always standing on the street. It is very hard work,” Wang Yanyan explained. “That day it was raining so hard and the police officers were on duty and their clothes were totally soaked, so my heart told me to go and lend them my umbrella.”
Pictures of Wang’s good deed have found their way online where she has been met with applause and high praise. Still, she will never receive the kind of recognition given to “Umbrella Dad,” an internet sensation from September who gained his fame by not efficiently wielding an umbrella while walking his son home from school.
