With over 1.3 billion people, China can sometimes seem hellishly crowded, so it’s easy to forget that it is also incredibly expansive, with lots of territory with no people at all — or in some cases, just one dude.
Meet Liu Shengjia. He is the entire population of Xuenshanshe village, Gansu province. His former neighbors have all either relocated or died. He still has some sheep to hang out with though.
According to CCTV, Liu has been here alone for around 10 years. While other villagers left due to scarce resources, he chose to stay behind and care for his aging mom. Once she was gone, it was just him and the sheep.
Liu spends most of his time breeding sheep. Other than that pleasurable pursuit, his life is unsurprisingly difficult. He has to trek quite a ways for water, and then carry it back home. Meanwhile, the nearest place to buy any food is miles away, so Liu tries to stay self-sufficient. He also picks up some extra cash looking after the nearby forest, and says that generally he likes his life of peace and sheep.
Here’s his neighborhood, Liu has his picks of the best digs.
But pickings are bit slim…
Lots of good places to sit though.
But it’s not like Liu lives a primitive life. The inside of his house actually seems pretty cozy, with lights, cell phone service and two beds, in case somebody wants to stay over.
“Surviving here is not a problem for me, but I still prefer to move to a more populous area when the time comes,” he said.
Well, let’s just hope that time comes soon, because the gods seem to be pretty upset at Gansu right now.
