A distressed woman climbed onto a ledge outside of a shopping mall in downtown Jinan and threatened to jump. When she failed to live up to her threats, onlookers assembled below shouted for her to “hurry up and get it over with.”
The woman was perched on the third floor of the shopping mall for over two hours. As the crowd grew impatient, rescuers desperately tried to come up with a plan to get her down safely, even as she steadfastly refused to talk to them. To make matters even more difficult there was nowhere to place an emergency air cushion, because the sidewalk below was filled with stalls, Toutiao News reports.
In the end, one rescuer was able to pop out of a billboard behind the woman and pull her inside. She was later sent to the hospital, the reason that she wanted to kill herself was not disclosed.
This incident is similar to one that happened in Shenyang last year, in which a crowd of onlookers urged a half-naked suicidal woman to jump from a 10th floor apartment window. Unfortunately, she didn’t let them down.
The year before that, a Shaanxi woman who had climbed to the top of a building and threatened to jump to her death was prodded on by a group of school kids who stood below yelling “Hurry up and jump for us!”
