Just when things look the darkest, a hero often emerges to stand up for us all, but can a hero go too far?
The “hero” in question this time is an unidentified young man who recently passed through the Xiamen airport. In the waiting area, he noticed a man nearby taking a snooze, sprawled out on the seats with his shoes and socks off and his bare feet exposed to the world.
Visibly struggling to hold back his rage, the mysterious young man films himself saying that two airport workers had noticed the sleeping man, but had done nothing; meanwhile, none of the people around him seem to care. The young man despairs over worsening Chinese manners and worries about what foreigners will think if they see the man snoozing barefoot. Finally, he does the only thing he can do.
He walks over, picks up the man’s shoes and throws them in the trash.
After this vigilante’s video was uploaded online onto NetEase, it quickly went viral across the Chinese internet, stirring up a storm of controversy. There were many who praised the young, “handsome” man’s actions:
“The only way that these kind of people can be made to understand how disgusting their actions are is by blunt methods like this. I applauded this young man!” one netizen commented on Weibo.
However, others think that while our mysterious hero’s heart may have been in the right place, he simply went too far this time:
“Taking your shoes off in public is certainly uncivilized; however, stealing someone’s shoes and throwing them in the trash is illegal,” another netizen argued.
“Why not just wake the man up and talk with him? Because that kind of video would not make you famous?” wrote another netizen questioning the young man’s motives.
Xiamen International Airport has even responded to the story, saying that they have no code of conduct regulations, so they can only persuade travelers not to disturb their fellow passengers. As for our shoe vigilante, the airport says that people should not try to take extreme actions, but instead seek out the staff for help.
But what do you do when someone steals your shoes when you’re sleeping at the airport?
Watch the video below:
Last year, a Chinese tourist on a flight from Bangkok to Xi’an kicked back and put her bare feet up on the armrest in front of her, disgusting her fellow passengers. With no hero on board, the passengers nearby appealed to a flight attendant, who merely apologized saying that there was nothing she could do because, “They are all Chinese,”
