On Thursday, scores of people were spotted lounging on furniture inside a Shanghai IKEA in an attempt to escape from the sweltering weather we’ve been suffering through recently. With its central air-conditioning and cozy furniture, locals couldn’t resist the temptation of rushing to IKEA to take a nap or just to chitchat with fellow refugees.
IKEA has almost always advocated a policy of “experiential shopping,” welcoming shoppers to sample furniture at their own leisure. The store does not even prohibit shoppers from taking a snooze on the displays, unless their behavior interferes with other customers.
Really, who could blame these people for taking full advantage of this policy with the mercury climbing all the way up the 36.1 degrees Celsius yesterday, the hottest day in Shanghai so far this year, according to Shanghai Daily. Fortunately for us all, the temperature is expected to go down over the next few days with more rainstorms expected to hit the city. Yay! More rain!
By this point, most netizens have gotten used to locals turning IKEA into their own personal slumber party in the summer, though some still disapprove of this kind of behavior.
“That’s what Chinese people are! They are always eager to jump on these cheap advantages,” one wrote.
“I bet this is just another of IKEA’s publicity stunts. You see, every news station reports this and IKEA doesn’t even need to promote its own shops anymore,” speculated another.
Earlier this month, a series of nude photos of a female shopper showing off her ass inside IKEA went viral online, leading some to speculate that IKEA had released the pics to promote its brand. IKEA was forced to release a statement denying these accusations.
