Struggling watermelon salesmen, pay attention! A guy from Pingdingshan city in Henan has managed to do surprisingly well for himself by carving calligraphy on the surface of his watermelons — selling 3,000 kg worth in 11 days (which sounds impressive to us!)
For his innovative salesmanship, 56-year-old Gu Xinliang has become a local and now national celebrity after photos of his artsy melons went viral online earlier this week.
“I never thought it would be easier for me to sell my watermelons this way, Gu tells a reporter. “Even though I like really calligraphy, it’s quite difficult to do it on a watermelon. At first, it took a while to do. It probably took me 10 minutes to finish just one character, but now I can make one in five minutes.
Gu said that he is really proud when people line up to buy his watermelons. Some customers even make special requests with what characters they want carved on, such as a big “囍” (double happiness).
He says that he always uses his nails to carve out the characters since it’s easier for him to control and it won’t damage the inside of the melon.
Before watermelons were taking the calligraphy world by storm, they were the hottest fashion trend of the summer of 2013:
Well, it’s time to grab a slice and enjoy the summer.
