With all the problems plaguing the 2016 Rio Olympics, it’s hard not to look forward to 2022, when the Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing, possibly without snow, but hopefully with one very neat-looking bridge.
Architects and engineers from Beijing and Vienna are currently hard at work on the innovative San Shan Bridge. The suspension bridge will span across the Gui River, taking visitors from downtown Beijing to Zhangjiakou in Hebei province where many of the Olympic events will be held.
The bridge is inspired by the Olympics itself with its five ring design. It also looks something like the structure of DNA or maybe a giant ray gun. Chris Precht, co-founder of the architecture studio Penda says that we should think of the dual helix bridge like a bicycle wheel.
The design even allows for wide pedestrian lanes on either side, separated by a row of trees or bushes.
Only 6 more years!
