Chinese netizens have fallen in love with yet another goofy, world-class athlete. While Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui unconsciously makes funny faces, Olympic high jumper Zhang Guowei purposefully takes weird pictures and does spastic dances on the mat after successful jumps.
Zhang’s signature pose is the kung fu crane (seen above). But his oddball personality shines through even before the competitions begin, check out these ID cards:
Zhang is well-known for his signature reactions after jumps. Here’s him at the IAAF Diamond League Oslo 2015:
And at the Golden Grand Prix Kawasaki 2016, after he successfully jumped over a 2.33m tall bar.
Another one from the Birmingham Diamond League 2016:
Unfortunately, for those waiting to see some more over-the-top dance moves in Rio, Zhang ranked just 25th in the qualifiers and didn’t reach the finals. He later posted on his Weibo account: “Don’t search for excuses for me, please. I am a professional athlete and I lost. The moment I landed on the mat, I felt scared and guilty. I am so sorry that I let you guys down.”
Aww, please don’t stop jumping and twerking, Zhang!
