Yesterday, senior Chinese leaders met with the Chinese Olympic delegation at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to commend them on their performance in Rio. Of course, even with all the gold medals and black suits in the house, all eyes were on two people: China’s president Xi Jinping and China’s sweetheart Fu Yuanhui.
Cameras captured Fu looking totally stoked as Xi Jinping approached her in line…
And then it happened. In a historic moment, Fu shook hands with Xi Dada, with their hands lingering entwined a half second too long:

Afterward, Fu confessed to her over 7 million followers on Weibo: “I really couldn’t control myself. It’s too exciting. I won’t wash my hands. I won’t wash my hands.”
At the ceremony, State General Administration of Sports Director Liu Peng affirmed Fu as a model for contemporary athletes, full of cheerful openness and positive spirit. Fu’s natural goofiness was certainly on display during the event.
Meanwhile, this ranks as possibly Xi Jinping’s most important handshake since a a 80-second one with former Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou last November.
CCTV’s Xinwen Lianbo marked the occasion by broadcasting 4 straight minutes of handshaking.
