Security camera footage has emerged of an SUV ramming into pedestrians in Yichang, Hubei province. These horrifying scenes come less than a day after a video went viral showing a driver running over three kids playing in a parking lot while being distracted by her phone.
The car is first seen hitting a passerby, before going around in a circle and colliding into a crowd of bystanders.
It then plowed into the curb, lifting up its front left wheel, and breaking off what appears to be the rear bumper off the car. The SUV then proceeded out of the camera’s view as nearby pedestrians rushed to the injured victims lying on the ground.
A total of six people were injured in this incident, thankfully with no serious or critical injuries according to the doctors at a local hospital.
The footage uploaded to YouTube by CCTV News is an amateur video of the security camera footage being played as people watch on and exclaim “[You] wouldn’t have been able to react to that,” with a variety of exasperated “oohs” and “ahhs” towards the end.
As for the reason behind all this madness, the driver, a 31-year-old man surnamed Zheng, said that his feet slipped on the pedals after he started the engine because he was wearing slippers. This in turn would’ve supposedly pushed down the accelerator as he turned the steering wheel to the right. Right.
Authorities have eliminated alcohol or drug abuse as possible causes for the shocking incident.
This is a reminder to us all to remain vigilant on the roads, either as a pedestrian or as a driver. And, if you’re a driver, please make sure to wear proper footwear.
