A group of gangsters have been sentenced by a Shanghai court for running a super shady bar in Jing’an District that specialized in ripping off laowai.
According to Shanghai Daily, the bar opened on Wuding Road last February, featuring bottom-shelf liquor at top-shelf prices and employing ladies who could trick customers into ordering the stuff without asking for the price tag.
As you might expect, the bar also offered “massage” services.
When customers refused to pay for the overpriced drinks, they would be threatened by the gangsters and confined inside the bar. If a customer did manage to make it out, they would be followed menacingly to make sure that the person didn’t try to go to the police, the court added. So, a lot like the infamous Shanghai tea scam, but with booze.
Shanghai authorities were finally tipped off about the bar by some foreigners who had lost some serious money inside. By the time that police busted the bar on March 15th, it was doing some pretty nice business, cheating eight foreigners out of 44,180 yuan in one month, Shanghai Daily reports. Maybe that’s why no one can afford to take the subway.
The ten gangsters were recently given suspended jail sentences from 12 to 37 months for extortion.
So, that’s one more thing to look out for around here.
