Alex Katz Exhibit @ West Bund, Qiao Space
London gallery Timothy Taylor brings over a major exhibition of works by Alex Katz, a New York based artist best known for his distinct minimalist aesthetic. Known as the precursor of pop art movement for his portraits and landscapes that feature a boldly reductive style and aggravated coloring, today is the first day of his exhibit until November the 13th. The exhibit named ”West Broadway and Spring”, includes portraits of his family and friends, still-lifes of flowers purchased from street vendors near his Manhattan studio, and landscapes drawn from the artist’s personal experiences in urban and rural locations.

Open Mic @ Yuyintang
Yuyintang puts on an open mic night, inviting all musicians and singers to grace the stage with their talent. Bring your own equipment and show Shanghai what you can do, jam with cool musicians and get in the live music scene.

Swing Dance @ JZ Latino

Light painting @ Anfu Road
For its inaugural exhibition in the gallery’s new Anfu Lu home, BANK presents a solo exhibit by the New York based artist, Austin Lee. Known for his cartoon-like works, Austin Lee first drafts his inspirations on an iPad and then transfer them onto more conventional painting techniques. Partially digital and with a dash of humor, definitely recommended for any contemporary art fans.

Rachael Yamagata @ Mao Livehouse
American folk singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata lands in Shanghai this Wednesday. Her full band will be performing your favourite classics such as ”Duet”, ”Be Be Your Love”, ”Dealbreaker”, ”You Won’t Let Me” and also new tracks from her new album ”Tightrope Walker”. The show starts at 8.30pm and ticket prices are ¥320 at the door.

West Bund Art & Design Fair 2016
The new edition of West Bund Art & Design is held at West Bund Art Center from Nov 9 (Wed) to Nov 13 (Sun). This year, nearly 31 leading contemporary galleries from domestic and abroad is participating and bring works from the most dynamic and pioneering artists to the fair.

Compost bin workshop @ Chalet Plus
Learn how to make your own compost bin to turn your food scraps into very fertile soil that can either be reused for your plants or for grow your own herbs in your kitchen this winter. To join rsvp through WeChat (ID: alizeebuyss), limited spots. The workshop starts from 7pm and 9pm, the price of ¥100 includes all necessary materials, including the bin, scrap paper and worms. If you have any scrap paper at home or at work, bring it to the workshop and use it in your compost bin.

Martin Creed @ West Bund, Qiao Space
Qiao Space over at West Bund hosts British artist Martin Creed’s first ever China-side solo called ”Understanding”, featuring Creed’s signature neons, sculptures, videos, small-scale canvas paintings and site- specific wall paintings.The artist incorporates everyday objects and activities into his work such as cardboard boxes, chairs with a minimalist approach.

Single Dogs Unite @Yuyintang

THREE Talk: ‘Singular Universities and Innovations in Education’ @ Three on The Bund

Journey to the West @Minsheng M21 museum
Notable Shanghainese artist Gu Wenda takes over Minsheng Museum’s Pudong from Nov 10. The exhibition includes around 300 pieces from the 1980s including experimental ink and wash paintings for which he’s best known for. The artist also has an outdoor installation called ”Red Light in Heaven” where the exterior of Minsheng M21 museum entirely in red lanterns.

Ladyfest Shanghai presents The Dating Monologues @ Daliah
On 11/11, China’s National Singles’ Day, Ladyfest Shanghai presents the 2nd annual “The Dating Monologues.” Think “Vagina Monologues,” but the raw stories of people dating in Shanghai will be revealed and shared. The purpose of this even it to produce an open platform to discuss dating in Shanghai. It will be fun, funny, and educational with games, raffles and more. Electric Zoo @ Expo Park
New York’s premiere electronic music festival is coming to China, and they’re debuting their kick-off event at the Expo Park from 1.30pm-9.30pm. They will bring some highlights from New York’s Electric Zoo: Wild Island, such as the giant octopus stage, animal themed costume performers, and much more. Swedish DJ Dada Life will be headlining alongside with Sander Van Doorn, Hucci, Mako, Oshi, Codeko, Cavia and Fader One. Regular pre-sale tickets are ¥399; Limited Animal Edition (Flamingo / Mammoth / Cobra / Jaguar) are ¥499 which includes a customized survival kit, special entry access, one beer and its ¥499 at the door.

Chi Fan For Charity 2016
Chi Fan For Charity takes the standard concept of a large gala dinner and throws it out the window! Taking place at fifty renowned restaurants simultaneously across the city on November 12th, each restaurant has donated a table of 10 each, providing a minimum ¥500 per person in value meal. All proceeds are 100% donated to this year’s charity beneficiaries Educating Girls of Rural China and Shanghai Young Bakers. 500 guests will be eating for a good cause and uniting at one afterparty at The Place, boasting free flow of everything, music, silent auction and raffles. Children Up-cycle Fashion Show @ Century Park
To be held in and around artist Liu Yi’s “Seed Planet,” (installed in Century Park’s Folk Village from Sept 4 to Nov 13) the Shanghai Project Children’s Program will relate to the inaugural theme, “Envision 2116” through a series of workshops. These programs will provide a rich experience in art, music, performance, field activities and nature that aim to inspire children’s imagination about life in the 22nd century.
