ACT Shanghai International Theater Festival: ‘Kraken’
ACT Shanghai International Theater Festival is an annual international theatrical event inviting theater groups from around the world to perform in Shanghai. The festival is aimed at promoting original works with spirit of the age and new interpretations of classics. There are six pieces in total with no dialogue. The show starts at 7.30pm and tickets are ¥120 each. A beautifully strange stream-of-consciousness idiocy from the master of mime, Trygve Wakenshaw.

Emotional Intelligence workshop with IPWS
IPWS & Octave hosts an information session about the Search Inside Yourself two-day workshop. With the facilitation of leadership Coach, Sabrina Shi, you will learn about the rationale and logic of this nine year program that has become one of the most respected emotional intelligence programs for leaders. There will also be discussion on the importance of mindfulness and how you can incorporate them into your daily life.

Jean Genet’s Supermarket @ DA+ Lab
After the successful premiere of Uncertainty Theater’s “Au Balcon” at Power Station of Art Shanghai, Jean Genet entrusted a mysterious person to open a supermarket in DA + Lab in M50. On October 15 Jean Genet’s Supermarket was opened officially. And till November 15 the “Supermarket” will attract the ”customers” to experience the interaction of visual form, literature’s image and abstract space. A collaboration between Uncertainty Theater and DA + Lab, works are displayed on the white walls, concrete column and wooden curtain, or even put behind the sliding windows, the exhibition purposefully arranged the art pieces in an ordinary domestic fashion instead of the ritualised contemporary display.

Michael Tilson Thomas & the San Francisco Symphony @ Shanghai Oriental Art Center
Innovative arts institutions in the United States. Under the baton of celebrated conductor Michael Tilson Thoman, they’ll be presenting a selection of classics from Chopin and Stravinsky (on the November 15 performance) to Shostakovich and Bruckner (on the November 17 performance). Featured soloist is 25 year old pianist Yuja Wang, coming off a recent “jaw-dropping” (Washington Post) performance at the Kennedy Centre. The show starts at 7.30pm and tickets range from ¥480-1380.

Diamond Ladiez Support Group @ Creator Space

Geng Jianyi Solo Exhibition @ OCAT Shanghai
“Stubborn Image – Geng Jianyi Solo Exhibition” remains on view at OCAT Shanghai till November 20. Artist Geng Jianyi presents new video installations produced in 2016. The works presented are aligned with Geng Jianyi’s attitude on making “non-artwork” throughout his artistic practice. Under the artist’s remodeling of the spaces, five types of handheld lamps and flashlights that function as projection devices transform the twenty-two built-in concrete pillars in the venue into reflective conduits of the videos, and the labyrinth-like makeshift walls separate these pillars. The viewing experience of this exhibition aims to provoke the viewer’s reflection on the liaison between everyday life, time, entirety and isolation.

Blue Man Group World Tour @ Shanghai Cultural Square
Ongoing from November 16th to December 4th, the Blue Man Group lands in Shanghai. A dynamic combination of music, comedy and technology, the show appeals to a broad range of age groups and cultural backgrounds. It is continually refreshed with new music, new stories, new instruments and new technology.

Paul Taylor Dance Company @Shanghai Oriental Art Center
The Paul Taylor Dance Company is one of the world’s most highly respected and sought-after ensembles. Dance maker Paul Taylor first presented his choreography with five other dancers in Manhattan on May 30, 1954, starting off more than 60 years of unrivaled creativity. Mr. Taylor became a cultural icon and one of history’s most celebrated artists, hailed as part of the pantheon that created American modern dance. For their two-night Shanghai performance the Company will perform selected pieces from his illustrious career (“Beloved Renegade”, “Promethium Fire”, “Mercuric Tidings”, and more.)

Martin Creed @ West Bund, Qiao Space
Qiao Space over at West Bund hosts British artist Martin Creed’s first ever China-side solo called ”Understanding”, featuring Creed’s signature neons, sculptures, videos, small-scale canvas paintings and site- specific wall paintings.The artist incorporates everyday objects and activities into his work such as cardboard boxes, chairs with a minimalist approach.

When ‘Tomorrow’ Comes @ Magnolia Theatre

The Laboratory: experimental Burlesque & cabaret show @ The Pearl
Anna Fur Laxis & Ennis F.W. – the evil masterminds behind Qi-POW! Burlesque & Cabaret, are bringing to Shanghai a new, stripped-down Thursday evening event to complement their regular bi-monthly full-scale weekend extravaganzas. “The Laboratory” will bring to the stage a sizzling mix of the city’s brightest emerging cabaret talent in burlesque, drag, comedy, song & dance, with feature performances from the Qi-POW! Taste Italy! @ Gemma
Taste Italy! Wine Academy and Gemma Restaurant invite you to learn how to pair Italian Food and Wine. The creative dinner event is led by wine educator Sam Chen, the China King of Blind Tasting. Ballet performance for babies @ Small Theatre
Scotland’s Barrowland Ballet brings a performance for those under four to the Shanghai Children’s Art Theater next month. The Pine Tree, Poggle and Me is the story of Vince, who wants to explore the forest but is too scared — until he meets the friendly Poggle. Together, they embark on an adventure through the forest in this warm-hearted, sensory performance with live music, clapping rhythms and comedy. This is a two day show and tickets are ¥180.

Vladimir Caamaño @ Kung Fu Komedy
Comedian Vladimir Caamaño is performing at Kung Fu Komedy for two nights on Nov 18th and 19th. Caamaño’s comedic style is the fruit of an immigrant Dominican family living in the cultural mecca that is New York City and is described as an elegant combination of urban grit and intellect. He is currently developing television shows with top comedy producers and networks. You can catch Vlad’s stand-up comedy on LOL, Kevin Hart’s new digital platform which will unroll this fall. Shan Shui Within @ MOCA Shanghai
Sixteen contemporary Chinese artists are displaying their works at MoCA Shanghai which provides viewers with the artists’ unique interpretations of traditional Chinese culture and how it has evolved, not only illuminating the emotions and state of the modern era but also providing assistance in the search for lingering traces of Chinese tradition. Serving as an outlook between contemporary and historical art and a reflection between the macro and personal world, Shanshui Within hopes to display the kaleidoscopic contemporary art world along with its creative approaches. The ultimate goal of this exhibition is for the works to move beyond the restrictive enclosures of museums and to be displayed in schools and communities as part of the “Art Momentum” project, which aims to bring contemporary art to the people.

Andy Warhol @ YUZ Museum
Yuz Museum is proud to organize for the first time in Asia, the Chinese premiere of Shadows by Andy Warhol: “a monument to impermanence” (Holland Cotter, New-York Times). Shadows is valued as the most mysterious work by Andy Warhol, the most influential artist of the 20th century, “the King of Pop”, that shows the unknown side of the artist. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the globally acclaimed Dia Art Foundation, New York. It opens at Yuz Museum, Shanghai on Saturday, 29th October and lasts until December the 18th.
