While no one is quite sure what to think yet of President-elect Donald Trump, Chinese netizens at least know that they like his granddaughter.
A video of Arabella Kushner reciting Chinese poetry has gone viral on Chinese social media. The video was posted by her mom, Ivanka Trump, on her Instagram account in February. Apparently, Arabella celebrated the Chinese New Year by performing songs and poems in Mandarin Chinese for her family.
There’s also this video from December 2014, showing Arabella during one of her Chinese lessons:
Chinese netizens are understandably impressed by Arabella’s Mandarin skills and some less understandably believe that it reflects well on Trump and his future presidency.
“Trump’s ‘China-bashing’ was all for show during the election, in his heart, he loves China,” commented one Weibo user.
Still, others are more suspicious about Arabella.
“In order to find out if Chinese people are secretely making fun of him… quick have his granddaughter learn Chinese!”
In fact, 5-year-old Arabella has been learning Mandarin from a Chinese nanny since she was 18 months old. Ivanka’s BFF Wendi Deng even stopped by sometimes to help her practice.
Considering that Trump has asked the White House to give his kids top security clearance, designating them as national security advisers, and that he was apparently unaware that he would have to replace West Wing staff, might Arabella be the next US ambassador to China?
Crazier things have happened.
