In perhaps the best news of the year, the Shanghai Metro will stay open 30 minutes later on Fridays and Saturdays, starting this Friday. Hooray!
But, before you get too excited, the new rule only applies to Metro Lines 1, 2 and 8, Shanghai Daily reports. It’s also important to note that they do not apply to the Line 2 section between Guanglan Road and Pudong International Airport.
On those three lines, three extra trains heading in both directions will be added before close on Friday and Saturday nights, along with the days before national holidays.
The much needed change is being made to meet growing demand, according to city metro officials. Residents would also like to see the number of metro lines offering late hours to grow as well.
The Shanghai Metro is currently the world’s largest rapid-transit system by length (and still growing), yet it closes too early for almost everyone’s liking. At least this is one small step in the right direction.
