ohn Oliver has made a name for himself on Last Week Tonight by comedically taking apart some of the world’s most important people and going in-depth to explain issues that most Americans might not know very much about. On Sunday night, Oliver found his latest target and issue: Xi Jinping and China.
In a well-researched 20-minute segment, Oliver did a more than admirable job of explaining some of the central issues of contemporary China, a nation that has progressed so much economically and lifted so many out of poverty, but remains under the control of a single party which jails dissidents, institutes Orwellian levels of surveillance in restive regions, and spends part of its proceeds on some truly bizarre propaganda videos featuring ethnically diverse children singing their hearts out about the benefits of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Deciding that China and its newly-crowned “president for life” Xi Jinping could use a taste of their own medicine, at the end of the segment Oliver presents his own “cuddly” Chinese propaganda video with children instead singing about the China that Xi “doesn’t want you to see.”
The whole segment is worth a watch, but the propaganda parody begins at around 19 minutes in:
Of course, if Oliver wasn’t already on China’s “untrustworthy list”after speaking with the Dalai Lama, he certainly is now.
