When visiting Portugal on Tuesday, Xi Jinping was eagerly greeted by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa who was literally salivating at the opportunity of meeting with the Chinese leader.
Cameras caught a sizeable strand of drool dripping from the 69-year-old De Sousa’s mouth as he shook hands with Xi, who was in town to promote China’s massive Belt and Road infrastructure initiative.
De Sousa is already an avowed fan of the trillion-dollar effort aimed at improving global trade and connectivity. Some speculated that the thought of securing some of those funds for Portugal had the president involuntarily frothing at the mouth.

Xi’s trip to Portugal resulting in the two countries signing a memorandum of understanding regarding the Belt and Road Initiative with the port of Sines set to be included in China’s grand plans.
“Portugal is the important junction that links the Silk Road and the maritime Silk Road,” Xi was quoted as saying. “There are natural advantages for China and Portugal to work together on the belt and road.”
