The show’s 300th episode, released on Wednesday night, features a scene in which a principled Towelie makes Randy Marsh say: “Fuck the Chinese government.”
That moment follows Randy’s trip to China in South Park’s previous episode which mocked Chinese censorship and how American companies self-censor to retain access to the Chinese market.
China’s leaders are generally not known for their sense of humor. Following the airing of the episode, South Park was soon banned from the Chinese internet, its videos and episodes were removed from streaming platforms, searches on Weibo returned no result, and even articles about the show on Baidu were deleted.
In response, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone published a mock apology letter, writing that “We too love money more than freedom and democracy.”
