he wife of Han Kuo-yu, Taipei’s mayor and the Kuomintang candidate for president, has been accused of spreading malicious false information regarding sex education in Taiwan.
At a ceremony celebrating the founding of a women’s support association in Pingtung county on Monday, Lee Chia-fan told the crowd that she had been sent videos from “many” concerned mothers showing third-graders being taught about anal sex and sixth-graders about orgasms.
According to a Taiwan News report, Lee condemned the schools for teaching information that was “not even available on the internet,” charging that such “avant-garde and advanced knowledge” shouldn’t be taught in primary schools, blaming a lack of government oversight for letting this happen.
In response, Taiwan’s minister of education declared later that day that such content is not found in any primary or secondary school textbooks in Taiwan, criticizing Lee for failing to verify the facts before making such accusations public.
The ministry itself later termed Lee’s speech as “malicious” aimed at causing “social panic,” calling her out for “reducing gender equality to a political ploy” and insisting that Taiwan’s sex education materials have been checked and verified by experts to be age-appropriate and to teach children to respect people’s differences.
President Tsai Ing-wen, Han’s rival in the upcoming election, added her voice to the backlash, declaring that Han and his wife should not be so “vulgar” and should base their statements on facts. Premier Su Tseng-chang also put in his two cents, accusing of Lee of repeatedly spreading false rumors.
Lee earned a master’s of science in education from the National Chiayi University. She currently serves as vice-chair of the Victoria Academy, a private school in Yunlin county. She has turned into a central figure in her husband’s campaign, carrying out a “lecture tour” focusing on women’s issues and education.
Meanwhile, the video that Lee appears to be referring to in fact shows a third-grade teacher in Kaohsiung teaching students some basic information about condoms. The teacher himself has even stepped forward to deny he taught the students about anal sex.
