more panda news, the Berlin Zoo has opted to avoid hurting China’s feelings in the naming of its panda cubs.n
The Berlin-basedTagesspiegelnewspaper had held a poll asking for name suggestions for the two pandas born earlier this year at the city’s zoo. “Hong” and “Kong” ended up coming out on top as readers expressed their support for the former British colony’s ongoing pro-democracy protests.
Other proposals included “Joshua Wong Chi-fung” and “Agnes Chow Ting” after two of Hong Kong’s most prominent protesters, as well as Tien Tien and Anmen Anmen.
In the end, however, the zoo decided to go with the more traditional names of Meng Xiang and Meng Yuan with Berlin mayor Michael Müller and Chinese ambassador Wu Ken celebrating the occasion this week.
China, of course, has a monopoly on the panda market. These two cubs will spend the next several years in Berlin before being taken back to their motherland.
